OUR PROJECTS
Lockheed L-12A Electra Junior
Lockheed Electra VH-HID (Affectionately known as Liz)
Lockheed L-12A Electra Junior # 1262 was built in 1937 at the Lockheed Burbank Plant, California.
The L-12A was among Kelly Johnson`s ( of Skunk Works, U2, F-104 and SR-71 fame) first projects. 130 L-12`s were built and there are currently around 12 still airworthy worldwide.
In 1939, #1262 was taken on by the USAAC.
In 1943, the USAAC sold # 1262 to the Pure Oil Company who operated the aircraft for over a decade before selling it to a private operator. Subsequently, #1262 was owned by several private operators in the US before it was exported to Australia in 1982. It remained on the US Register until September 1987 when it became VH-HID. There it was owned by a number of private operators including Doug Hamilton who bought Liz in 2007 and sold it to Rob Broek, Wanaka, NZ in 2019.
Liz is now based in Alexandra NZ where she will be prepared for the New Zealand Register.
Beech Staggerwing D17s
Staggerwing ZK-AMU
AMU arrived in New Zealand on 1st November 1995 after being purchased from Canada by Robin Campbell. She flew for 300 hours in New Zealand before being sold to an Australian owner in June 2008. On the 3rd attempt to fly her to Australia they finally arrived in Bathurst after leaving Ardmore in Auckland and going via Norlfolk, Lord Howe and Archerfield. It then sat in a hangar and never flew.
She was then sold to Rob Broek from Wanaka and shipped back to New Zealand and arrived in Port Chalmers in June 2022. It was based at Wanaka where the process began to get her back to flying condition until it came to us in December 2023. With Robins valuable input we aim to have her back on the NZ Register and flying mid 2024.
Piper Cub
Piper Cub ZK-BWG
The “Cub” is a special airplane for Tinshed as it was originally purchased by all 3 of us when Henry was still alive. She was rescued from a covered sheep yard in Southland where she had sat for 21 years. Although she was in remarkably good condition we decided she deserved a full rebuild. Progressed stopped for a while with Henry’s passing but we are committed to finish her in honour of Henry and the original Tinshed crew.
